Autour d’une série d’échanges avec des personnes incarcérées du Pénitencier de l’Etat de Oaxaca, au Mexique, s’est développé un questionnement sur l’enfermement. En étudiant les processus créatifs des artisans de cette prison, lieu de production d’une majeure partie de l’artisanat oaxaquénien, je développe une installation sonore composée d’un panier à l’échelle d’un corps adulte moyen et d’un tissage de nos conversations. La piste son est travaillé de façon à masquer toute information intelligible, et à censurer son contenu, en reflétant le silence auquel les incarcérés font face.
Throughout a series of exchanges with the prisoners of the Penitentiary of the State of Oaxaca, I started writing about confinement. After a number of visits to prison, I observed the creative processes of its craftmen, and learnt to weave. The prison itself is a place where a major part of Oaxaquenian craft is made, based on this, I developped a sound installation comprised of a basket, roughly the size of an average human, and threads of our conversations. The soundscape masks any intelligible conversations, in order to censor the contents, thus preserving the silence that the incarcerated are sentenced to.
